Kiln Dried Ash Logs And Oak Logs Compared

Logs For Wood Burner

Part of the experience of burning your logs for wood burner is choosing the best wood species. Many customers prefer one type of kiln dried log and they often stick with it.

By kiln drying the logs it brings the moisture level down from 60-50% to 20% or less, this has many benefits, including an efficient burn (less energy is used to disperse water) and less water vapour enters the flume or chimney. Kiln dried logs also quickly deliver a high heat, low smoke, less emissions, and a consistent result.

Kiln dried ash is naturally dry when green as a species, this means that when it’s kiln dried it produces logs that are easy to light and offer low smoke, a clean burn and a consistent high heat output – the perfect logs for stoves.

Kiln dried ash is the most popular species for woodburners and fireplaces, but also for catering people making woodfired pizza as it offers the high heat needed to quickly cook a pizza in a stone oven.

Kiln dried oak is a more dense wood species, each log is heavier in weight and it burns more slowly.

Kiln dried oak is preferred by many customers because it offers a good heat result, it has 20% moisture or less and it is known to last longer than other species like ash or birch logs.

When kiln dried oak burns it produces a mild fragrance which customers enjoy in their living rooms.

Although most customers like to buy one species, another option is to mix the logs as you burn them. Start with ash, as it’s easier to light and produces a high heat, then later add oak which burns more slowly, but still offers a good heat.

The fire can also be started with kiln dried ash kindling, this is in small pieces and is also sold on the Pheasant site along with natural firelighters.
