Oak Porches and Carport Kits

Yes. Every kit is cut to the sizes you enter on the product page. The oak porch runs from 1.5m to 2.1m wide and 0.6m to 1.8m deep. The carport runs from 3m to 10m wide and 3m to 4m deep, which covers a single car, two side by side, or a longer run for a work vehicle and trailer.

Posts are 150 x 150mm and 2400mm high as standard, with 2.7m posts available if you want more clearance under the frame.

Yes, that is what they are made for. Each frame arrives cut and drilled to size with the fixings and assembly hardware included, so you screw it together rather than cutting or jointing anything yourself.

A porch frame is a few hours’ work and a carport takes longer, six hours or more. Build time depends on the size you have gone for and the post height, as taller posts take more handling. You will want a second pair of hands for standing the posts and lifting rafters.

Most porches fall under permitted development in England, provided the ground floor area stays under three square metres measured externally, no part sits more than three metres above ground level, and no part comes within two metres of a boundary that fronts a highway.

Our larger sizes go over three square metres, so it is worth working out your floor area before you order. Flats, maisonettes and homes under an Article 4 direction are treated differently. Check with your local authority if you are unsure.

A carport is normally treated as an outbuilding rather than an extension. That usually means it needs to sit to the side or rear rather than forward of the main elevation of the house, and there are limits on height and on how much of the garden can be built on.

Height limits are tighter within two metres of a boundary, which is worth bearing in mind if you are looking at the taller 2.7m posts. Check your position and boundaries with your local planning department before ordering.

The ground needs to be level and the posts need securing down. Concrete pads, a slab, an existing patio or a driveway all work as long as the surface is solid and even.

Posts can be set into concrete or bolted down onto post supports, which we stock in brown or galvanised to suit 150 x 150mm posts.

No. Both are supplied as frames so you can finish the roof to match your property. The porch kit is the frame, and the carport includes the frame and rafters. From there you can tile, felt or board it.

Leaving the covering out means you are not paying for tiles that do not match the ones already on your house.

Green oak is freshly sawn timber that carries on moving as it dries. Some surface splitting and slight warping in the posts is normal over the first few months and settles as the frame weathers.

Posts and top rails are planed rather than rough sawn, so you get a smooth face rather than the look of cheaper frames, and it takes an oil or stain evenly.

You do not have to. Left alone, green oak weathers to a silver grey that suits most properties.
